How Does Mold Growth Happen? 

As an essential part of the natural environment, mold accumulates to feed off decomposing organic material and allow for new growth. In nature, mold will often collect where there are organic substances present to feed off. Objects that encourage mold growth include dead trees, animal carcasses, decomposing plants, and much more. You may not expect concrete to boast an abundance of these substances, but this material supplies just enough organic material for mold to spread in the right climate. 

What Exactly Does Mold Need to Grow?

Mold growth is reliant on a variety of factors that allow for its reproduction and spread. Like any living organism, mold requires oxygen to survive. That is why you will never see mold grow underwater or in sealed containers. Temperature is also a key factor when it comes to the growth and spread of mold. Believe it or not, mold growth is reliant on the same temperatures that are favorable to humans. For mold to spread and reproduce, temperatures must range between 40℉ and 120℉. If temperatures fluctuate above or below this range, mold will become dormant. The same rings true for humidity levels. For mold to grow, humidity levels must be above 50%. Stopping this growth and keeping mold dormant is as simple as lowering the humidity levels of your home beneath 50% with an appliance like a dehumidifier. 

How Does Mold Grow on Concrete? 

Mold will not find enough nourishment on concrete. But any mold can feed on the moisture, algae, bacteria, pollen, dust, dirt, dead skin, and other particles that commonly accumulate on concrete. Mold produces an acid that is proven to deteriorate concrete. This acid causes the concrete material to become more absorbent, which allows for further accumulation of moisture and other particles that mold needs to spread. The presence of mold on concrete creates an endless cycle that is perfect for both the growth and spread of mold.  

How to Remove Mold Growth 

Now that you know how and why mold grows, it’s important to understand its severity. Mold is dangerous to humans and the homes that we inhabit. That’s because mold has a habit of spreading and breaking down materials like concrete foundations, crawl spaces, and more. Uncontrolled mold can lead to serious health problems, but it can also weaken concrete surfaces to the extent that they can no longer support weight. 

It can prove to be a relatively simple process to remove mold, unless the area containing the mold is large. In this case, it is best to rely on the expertise of a local technician near you for proper removal. However, if the area containing the mold is relatively small, there is a DIY method that you can use to deal with your mold problem.  

Scrub the area where mold has accumulated with a fungicide; this alone may do the trick. Be sure to use a HEPA vacuum to remove excess mold and fallen materials. In some cases, sandblasting or steam cleaning might be necessary. While a colored spot may remain on your wall after scrubbing, know that the mold is now removed and the spot is just a result of its prior presence.
